The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) is designing a realignment of State Highway 73 (SH 73) from Mingha Bluff to Rough Creek, within Arthur's Pass National Park. We completed investigations for highway improvements to the 5 km length of SH 73 between Mingha Bluff and Rough Creek in October 2009. A range of safety issues and concerns were identified in this section of highway, including the curvature of the highway, highway widths, sight distances (ability to see oncoming traffic), drainage, natural hazards (rock fall) and the highway's accident history.
We have now identified a realignment option that addresses road safety concerns. The new alignment will be closer to the railway and therefore provide a reduced environmental impact on the adjacent National Park. The alignment will also minimise disruption to traffic during construction, and will provide a long term solution for this key strategic highway across the Southern Alps.
We are now seeking feedback from the public and stakeholders on the proposal.
You can find out more about this project on the SH73 Arthurs Pass (Mingha Bluff realignment) summary page.
