SH58 Paremata Road safety improvements

Updated: 22 June 2011

Improving your safety on the state highway is important to NZTA, which is why we investigate and implement changes to our roads every year. One of these changes occurred before Christmas 2008 where we installed double yellow no passing lines along State Highway 58 (SH58). This change identifies that this area is not safe to overtake on due to its narrow and windy nature.

Further to this alteration we are considering what will best address turning issues in the area of Bayview/Seaview Roads, Oak Avenue and Postgate Drive as many members of the community have raised concerns over this section of state highway. Of particular concern is right hand turns across the traffic from the side roads.

In order to make travelling in the area easier and safe, NZTA is considering installing a raised median on SH58 east of Bayview/Seaview Roads and establishing a roundabout at Postgate Drive. The raised median will mean right-hand turns in and out of Bayview/Seaview Roads and Oak Avenue will no longer be permitted, however a new roundabout at Postgate Drive and the existing Roundabout at Paremata will cater for these.

The new roundabout is also expected to address right turning problems in and out of Postgate Drive and also to provide a location to undertake a u-turn.

These changes are yet to be finalised, so in order to find the best solution for all, we need the community's views and comments on how this may affect you. When we have collated all the information we will work on a final design to implement. We have been working with Porirua City Council on potential safety enhancements on SH58 for some time and now need your input to ensure we find the solution that fits everybody's requirements.
