Woodend Corridor investigation

Updated: 13 September 2011

Traffic volumes along SH1 in North Canterbury and through Woodend are steadily increasing. To cope with this growth the capacity on SH1 will need to be increased in the future. We are planning for this now so the extra land needed to increase the capacity of SH1 successfully is protected, this will make things easier in the future.

There are two possible corridors SH1 could take through North Canterbury. One involves four laning the existing highway that goes through Woodend; the other corridor would involve building a new section of highway that runs to the east of Woodend. Both options include four-laning the motorway from Lineside Road to Pineacres.

For each corridor there are a number of options. The investigation we are doing will find the best possible option for each corridor and once this is done the two corridors will be compared and the best corridor selected.

We are now seeking feedback from the public and stakeholders on the proposal.

You can find out more about this project on the Woodend Corridor subsite.
