BRT & Northern Busway
Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is a system comprising the busway and online stations in which the rapid transit vehicle is a "rubber-wheel" bus running on the carriageway rather than a rail vehicle running on rails. The North Shore BRT system will consist of a busway with stations and infrastructure, services and associated bus priorities. The system includes local and cross-town services and the shelters and information to be provided on these routes.
The two-way busway will run alongside the eastern side of the northern motorway between Constellation Drive and Esmonde Road, and a southbound busway between Esmonde Road and the Harbour Bridge.
The Northern Busway should alleviate pressure of growth by providing frequent services, so that passengers will not require timetables. The major benefits of using the Northern Busway network are:
-
Avoid traffic congestion for buses and emergency vehciles during peak traffic
-
Better reliability as travel pattern will be consistent
-
Bus services will run at regular and frequent intervals
The Busway will also have the ability to run vehicles on the road system, allowing some services to deviate off at certain stations to service other areas as required.
