Onewa Rd
Traffic will benefit from improvements to safety and motorway access when stage two works of the Northern Busway, now underway, are completed in early 2009.
The existing two-way bridge over the motorway that involves tight, high speed turns will be demolished and replaced by two one-way bridges. One will provide a general traffic lane for the southbound off-ramp; the other a traffic lane and a bus lane for the southbound on-ramp. These gradually curving bridges will improve safety for motorists using the interchange.
A separate lane each for north and southbound heading onto SH1 from Onewa Road will be created with the widening of Onepoto Bridge by North Shore City Council.
To make travelling by bus faster and more reliable, a new dedicated bus lane will provide easy access to the motorway for citybound buses. Creating a separate lane for buses will improve motorway access for general traffic. North Shore City Council will be extending their bus and high occupancy vehicle (HOV) down Onewa Road to the intersection with Sylvan Avenue to complement these measures.
Raising the minimum clearance over the motorway to six metres will improve height clearance at Onewa.
The upgrade will be completed next to live traffic, with overnight and off-peak closures to motorway lanes and ramps to minimise disruption to SH1.

Southbound off-ramp closure
The SH1 southbound off-ramp to Onewa Road will be closed from Monday 28 May for approximately 18 months so construction of two new bridges can take place. Motorists can use Northcote Road off-ramp and Esmonde Road off-ramp as alternative routes. The northbound on- and off-ramps and the southbound on-ramp at Onewa will be unaffected by this closure.
