Public and community group consultation for the Northern Busway began in 2000. The beginning of construction was marked by an official sod turning at the Esmonde Road Interchange in April 2004.
The Northern Busway Project is being delivered through a partnership between Transit New Zealand, North Shore City Council, Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA) and Auckland City Council. The Busway Project Office (BPO) was the delivery arm of the four agencies for busway Stage 1.
