Plan ahead for travel in Auckland this summer

Updated: 29 January 2012

Work on Auckland’s motorways is hitting high gear this summer season.

To avoid delays getting around the city, plan ahead before you travel and allow extra time for your journey.

Northbound motorway over Newmarket

NOW OPEN

Thank you for your patience.

What is happening?

Major work will be taking place and parts of the motorway will be closed at the Bombay Hills in the south, as well as the Auckland Harbour Bridge, Victoria Park Tunnel and Newmarket Viaduct in the central city. The work over summer takes place until February. Where possible it has been timed for the evenings, weekends and holidays when traffic is lightest. Accelerating this essential work now will deliver widespread benefits helping to improve safety, congestion and travel times for all drivers.

Why is it happening?

The work will take place during the dry summer season until February in a final push to complete the big motorway projects. There will be some periods of severe disruptions on some sections of motorway, so we need your support and patience to ensure we keep Auckland moving.

Plan ahead – for weekends and events

If you’re travelling to a festival, event, Christmas shopping or out for the weekend, it’s best to check your route before you travel. You can:

  • Leave extra time for your journey – up to 30 minutes for long distances
  • Follow any signposted detours in place
  • Consider taking an alternative route or going by bus, train or ferry
  • Leave before or after peak times.
