Most vehicles in New Zealand are required to display registration plates. These are provided for a vehicle when it is first registered in New Zealand. General purpose plates are alpha numeric (containing both letters and numbers), with up to six characters. A registration plate stays with a vehicle for the length of its life, unless it's replaced after being lost, stolen or damaged, or with personalised plates.

You can replace your general purpose registration plates with personalised plates, which you can transfer from vehicle to vehicle.

You can obtain supplementary registration plates that can be attached to objects such as dog boxes or bike racks that obscure permanent registration plates.

Duplicate registration plates can be obtained for lost, stolen, destroyed or damaged personalised plates, and for damaged, destroyed or lost ordinary registration plates (with a standard set of characters).
