Buses and taxis

Updated: 23 November 2009

Buses and taxis (including shuttles) - which carry passengers for hire or reward - must meet all the vehicle standards required for the type of vehicle - the class - that applies to them. Standards vary depending on the class. But because they carry passengers, they must also meet passenger service vehicle standards. And there are added safety requirements for such vehicles because they provide public transport.

Requirements for passenger service vehicles

The Passenger Service Vehicle Rule (PDF, 480 KB, 24 pages) sets out:

  • legal requirements which are checked when the vehicle is entry-inspected
  • best practice approaches that drivers can voluntarily follow, for example:
    • getting wheelchair anchorages, ramps and hoists checked and certified for vehicles transporting people with special needs
    • having the towing connections checked and certified for situations where you're towing a light trailer.
